TEACHER OF THE YEAR

2018-2019 TEACHER OF THE YEAR JULIE BERNARD

Terrebonne High School Alum and 23-Year Veteran Educator Receives Title Twice

Mrs. Julie Bernard made THS history when she was chosen by her colleagues as the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year for Terrebonne High, making her the only two-time recipient of the honor.  Bernard, an English teacher, first won the award in 1999 after teaching only four years.  Often called a "teachers' teacher," Bernard has spent her years at THS not only educating students, but presenting scores of innovative, professional strategies, methods, and technology to the faculty.  Some of the topics include: Reading and Language Competencies Project, Cooperative Learning, INTECH Strategies, Socratic Seminars, LINCS, Close Reading, Questioning, Google-Classroom, New Teacher Orientation, ExamView, I.C.E., TEACHnology, and Classroom Management.  This January, she is slated to present a Google websites session for the school district.  Recently awarded a class set of Chromebooks and an Interactive Smart TV, Bernard joined the first District Google Classroom Cohort and went paperless in her classroom.  Combined with her classroom websites, Bernard asserts, "This has invigorated me with that ‘new-teacher feeling’ of discovery and experimentation.” Bernard went on to say, “One of the highest triumphs is inspiring others to pursue careers in education.”  She has supervised two Nicholls student teachers, each now educating young people in our community, and several of her own English students have now become teachers and have acknowledged her as their mentor.
